The District

I realize that I stopped writing and updating my blog. This is not due to me forgetting about it. Quite the contrary. I thought about posting several times. But when I tried to come up with something to talk about, I would come to the realization that nothing interesting and blog worthy had happened. But now I'm back in DC to start working and I'm sure my life will be slightly more interesting. So, I will now give a general update of the last two weeks. Lets see...
I worked at Harry's for most of the time I was home. It's never dull in that place. Every time I come home, there is a new bum to meet, or an update on the downwardly spiraling lives of our regular bums. We've got this new guy... I don't know his name, but he's a small skinny guy with no hair, most likely in his fifties. He comes in a couple of times a day, talking to himself. I don't mean mumbling. I mean a full conversation. And he's always carrying a small American flag. I think someone gave it to him at the Memorial Day parade last week. Damn people trying to be nice. Aside from that, Gary the Puppet and his band of misfits who live in an apartment across the street are getting more insane. This guy Gary has some kind of disease (I think MS) and he's all messed up. He's got a white trash wife. I mean waaaay white trash. She's got a daughter a couple months younger than me and a son about two years older than me. The son is the only slightly normal one. The daughter just had a baby last year and the poor kid has a trech in his throat cause his lungs didn't ully develop because the daughter was smoking weed while she was pregnant. These guys are pretty much at the bottom of our list of bums.
I got my hair cut on Thursday and colored on Friday. It's ver different and I really like it. It's shorter (only to my shoulder) and I've got a side bang . Plus it is layered with a face frame. The new cut, with the color.... its good summer hair. Hahaha.
Overall, home was pretty uneventful. My sister got into the National Honor Society. She's an overachiever and, while I was the vice president, she'll probably become the president. That's just the type of person that she is. My mom basically told me that Leigh Ann was too good to go to a school like Catholic. Thanks mom! My grandparents are coming home next week for my cousin Matt's wedding. They're driving again. And they said they might stop here over the weekend to take me to lunch and see me. That could be good or it could be bad. I'm not sure yet.
Yesterday the four of us took a trip into the city. My dad thought it would be a fun thing to do. And something different. I swear, for living so close to New York City, I don't go there very often and I probably know less about the city than some tourists. In certain regards. In other was, I definitely know more. Butwe dont go to the city that often. Why would we? It's such a hastle to sit in traffic and then pay $25 to park. There are crowds and its noisy and I don't really have much desire to do touristy things in New York. That just seems rediculous to me and everyone else I know. Well, we went to the city yesterday. We took a double decker tour, which was kind of cool. The guy told us a couple things we didn't know and we got to the see the city from a different perspective. That was nice. We got off in Chinatown and walked to Little Italy, where they just happened to be having a street festival for the Feast of St. Anthony. My sister and I convinced our parents to go to Ferrara's, which is (by far) the greatest bakery in the world. It's amazing. I got a lobster tail and an iced coffee. It was heaven. I always get the lobster tail when I'm there. They're just so damn good. It's something to be experienced. Just off the corner of Grand and Mulberry, if anyone is interested. So after the bakery, we took a cab to the western end of SoHo and went to the Tenenment Museum, which was really cool. There was an obnoxious lady, who thought she knew everything, on our tour though. I hate peopel like that. Why come on the tour if you know everythign already? Wht spend the money? Well, after we were done at the museum, we walked back to Little Italy to get dinnerbecause there were just so many good restaurants. While we were eating, they had a parade where a statue was carried up and down Mulberry Street and people gave donations and prayed to the saint. My dad (being the ass that he is) decided to go stand by the statue so I could take his picture and send it to his friend. They thought it was funny. So that was our day. We had a good time.
And now I'm back in DC and I have work in the morning. I'm sure it will be good and I'll have a fine time. I'm looking forward to just being able to settle into a routine and get used to things. It's like when you start the semester... you're still trying to remember where your classes are and figure out how the semester is going to work out in terms of work. By the end of the week, I'm sure I'll have it all figured out.
Ok, I am completely exhausted from getting up, packing my car, driving down here, unpacking my car, going to Giant, unpacking my room and setting everything up. So I'm going to read my book and go to bed early.

Home Front

The mystique that surrounds coming home and seeing the town you grew up in has worn off. Now I'm just bored. Know what I did today? Absolutely nothing. I drove my sister to school, went back to bed, made a dentist appointment and watched the first hour of 24 that I missed last night. That's it. I mean, 24 was the most thrilling part of my day (not that it isn't usually the most thrilling part of my Mondays). But on the excitement scale, it was followed closely by the scheduling of my root canal follow up visit. That's just pathetic. I'm ready to get back to school at this point.
I think the rest of the week might be a bit more interesting. I'm going to get new tires on my car, go read to my mom's class for Read Across America week, get a pedicure and babysit. The excitement is almost too much to handle. But speaking of my car tires.... my g-ma called today and while I was talking to her she asked how I was getting back to school. When I told her I was driving, she said "Oh, so that's ok with your parents, obviously?" No. Actually I was planning on getting up really early on Sunday and leaving before they woke up. Maybe they won't notice my keys are missing. What the hell? Yes they know I'm driving. Then she tells me to make sure I leave early because, ya know, last time I hit traffic. Duh. It was the Sunday after Thanksgiving, it was pouring rain and there was construction through all of Delaware. Did she expect me to fly down 95?
Well, the most interesting part of my day (24) did not disappoint. If you don't watch this show, you should. This week, a bunch of African terrorists infiltrated the White House and took the President's daughter hostage until the President and Jack Bauer surrendered themselves (they were in a lockdown room). Next week, there is going to be a huge explosion at the White House, Jack is going to try and save the President and the FBI is gonna go rogue after a direct order from the Vice President to stand down. I can't wait! Overall, it's a little far fetched. You have to just go with it and not ask too many technical questions about the realistic posability of things. If you can do that, it's a great show.
I don't know why but it sucks me in every week. I've been watching since the first season in 2001 (when I was in the 8th grade!). Honestly, its not a show that I could see very many liberal democrats being a fan of. It's all about storming buildings, guns blazing and interrogating the shit out of the bad guy until he tells you everything. Really, I think it probably had a big influence on the initially formation my conservative views. Which is sad I know, but it had a lot to do with the time (october 2001) and being able to see America physically and literally kick the crap out of the terrorists. My views aren't based on 24 or Jack Bauer anymore (obviously) but at 13 it was something that caused me to become more aware of the world and take a stance on issues. That... and The West Wing. But everyone my age who is interested in politics watched that show.
I think I'm getting sick. Oh, and I hurt my shoulder yesterday. That is always fun. It's been over a year since I hurt it last, so I'd almost forgotten how it felt. I've felt terrible all day. I've got a headache and I'm getting all achy. Damn it! This needs to be done with. I don't have time to deal with being sick. There is homework to be done and car tires to be bought!!
Perhaps I should take some Sudafed and go to bed early. Haha. Yea, ok. That'll happen. But I am going to go take something and hope to fight off whatever it is that I'm getting.

Home Again

Ahhh, its good to be back in Bayonne. I actually looked forward to coming home (other than the dreaded housing convo, but more on that later). But I like it because it seems like nothing ever really changes here. Not drastically at least. Maybe one or two stores will change (popeye's closed and the new lightrail station is almost done) but it's like my town is unfazed by time or any outside factors. Without a doubt, I know I can come home and go to Pompeii to get pizza or drive through Magic Fountain in the summer and get an Orea Hurricane. When I come home for Easter, Mr. Softee will be out selling ice cream with his music playing and kids chasing him down. Growing up across the street from a park, there was rarely a two or three day streak where we didn't have Mr. Softee on summer night. I guess everyone feels the same way when they think about coming back to the town they grew up in. As bored and restless as I get when I'm home for too long, its great when I first get here.
Ok, I just got completely sidetracked for like a half hour looking at noteable CUA alums. I'm not sure why or how I was looking this stuff up, but its all right there on Wikipedia. I was stunned how many people actually went to Catholic (other than John Voight, Ed McMahon, Susan Sarandon, Terry McCauliffe and Ed Gillespie). We mention them on our tours. I mean, did you know that John Slattery of Mad Men went to Catholic? How about Jim McGreevy (the former gay governor of NJ)? Brian Williams of NBC (I did know about him). Rosanna Scotto of Fox 5 NY news. Brian Cashman, the senior VP and GM for the Yankees. Wally Pipp, the Yankees first basemen famous for losing his spot to Lou Gehrig. John Douglas, the current shortstop for the Blue Jays. Richard Nixon's daughter Julie. The actress who voiced Ursula in The Little Mermaid. The co-writer of the Spiderman 2 screenplay. The current presidents of La Salle and Villanova and the former president of Notre Dame. Timothy Shriver. The guy's a Kennedy! His mother is JFK and RFK's sister and his sister, Maria, is maried to Ah-nold. It's Uncle John and Uncle Bobby! His Uncle Ted is dying! And our best alum (in my opinion)... the guy who discovered synthetic rubber! :::i'm being overly dramatic:::
Ok, I have obviously gotten waaay sidetracked. I've suddenly become very interested in Wikipedia-ing the entire Kennedy family. Not that I'm going to become a democrat or anything. I just don't know too much about the whole family. Other than the fact that I know there are about a hundred of them and they're cursed. So I think I'm gonna spend some time researching them tomorrow. God, I must be bored. There must be some homework I could do. But we're goingto get 6-9 inches of snow tomorrow into Monday so I'll need to keep myself entertained and what's better than reading up on one of the most doomed, cursed families of the democratic party? Haha, excuse me while I go be sinical.

Spring Break

I'm pretty sure I just got bit by a mosquito. Isn't it a little early for them? Or I'm breaking out in hives. I'd rather it be the mosquitoes. Spring Break begins today..... and I'm still at school. I'm going home in the morning though so it won't be too bad. Spring Break was ushered in this afternoon with beautiful 60 degree weather. Granted, it was overcast and drizzled for a hot second but still. It was more of a spring type drizzle as opposed to a winter freezing rain thing, so it didn't really bother me. Maybe the weather will stay like this from now on. I could get used to it.
Well, we've got a few things going on the housing front. I'm gonna wait and see if something works out before I get into details. Maybe there could be a breakthrough in the next few hours and I can go home with a possible solution to present to my mom. I'm really dreading going home. I've actually got a pain in my stomach thinking about it because I know that somehow, my mom will find a way to completely blame me for this entire situation. Which isn't fair because I have no control over it. I'm considering getting home, telling my parents I need to go to Rite Aid for something and just driving right back to school. I think that might help alleviate the problem. Complete and utter avoidance of the issue.
I have to clean the whole trailer tonight. It can't be left messy while we are gone for a week. And I still have to pack. Great. I'm so excited. Its a great way to start break. A drink, leaning, packing and dinner. That's just a hoppin' party. Next year Spring Break will be great. At this point I'll be boarding a flight to Las Vegas and getting in when its dark and the strip is all lit up.It'll be so nice. But that's not until next year.... Only 364 days to go.
